Pajam 2
Pajam 2 (Lancep)
Cox Orange Pippin × M.9
Institute National de la Recherche Agronomique, France, 1979
Developed in France as a selection of 'Paradis Jaune de Metz,' the M9 Pajam 2 (Cepiland) rootstock is one of the most vigorous clones within the Malling 9 family. It was selected during a clean-up program initiated by CTIFL (Centre Technique Interprofessionnel des Fruits et Légumes) to eliminate viruses from the original M.9 material. It reduces mature tree size to roughly 40% to 45% of a standard seedling, making it 10% more vigorous than M9T337. Due to a typically shallow and brittle root architecture, growth practices necessitate a permanent trellis or pole support along with standard irrigation. Pajam 2 is highly precocious, encouraging rapid early cropping and excellent fruit size. Regarding health challenges, it shows a strong susceptibility to root asphyxia (waterlogging) and lacks resistance to woolly apple aphids and fire blight, though it exhibits slightly better behavior in replanted soils compared to standard M9 clones.
