B.118
Budagovsky 118
M.8 × Red Standard
Budagovsky Research Station, Russia, 1960
Developed at Russia's Michurinsk College of Agriculture by crossing 'Moscow Pear' with mixed M.8/M.9 pollen, Budagovsky 118 (Bud 118) is a highly vigorous apple rootstock engineered for extreme cold hardiness. It produces a robust semi-standard tree roughly 85% the size of a seedling, offering early precocity without requiring permanent support due to its deep, expansive root system that excels in drought conditions. Disease-wise, Bud 118 boasts strong resistance to collar rot (Phytophthora) and moderate resistance to both fire blight and replant disease, alongside low susceptibility to burr knots and root suckering. However, growers must proactively manage its vulnerability to woolly apple aphids, as the rootstock lacks natural resistance to this below-ground pest.
