History & Origin: Discovered in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, by growers Alan Baigent and Geoff Plunkett as a stable somatic mutation on a Royal Gala tree. Qualities & Sizing: A commercial benchmark for striped Gala sports, delivering a bold, striking red stripe over a solid dark-red wash well ahead of physiological maturity. Fruit size is reliably medium-to-large if tree vigor is properly backed by balanced nutrition. Climate & Color Stability: Highly stable against genetic reversion compared to Gale Gala. However, because it relies on a visible contrast between its dark stripes and a lighter background wash, warm monsoon nights can dull the background color, making the fruit look muddy rather than bright red.
