Early Red One (Erovan) served as the vital genetic bridge connecting historical American strains to Europe's modern apple industry.During the late 1970s and 1980s, European nurseries, particularly in fruit-growing hubs like South Tyrol, Italy, aggressively imported elite, high-color American mutations to upgrade their traditional orchards. Among these imports was Early Red One. While its strong, standard growth required intensive pruning, Italian pomologists (fruit scientists) were captivated by its extraordinary ability to throw a solid red blush weeks ahead of older sports. Instead of just cultivating it, Italian and French breeders used it as a selection benchmark in their elite blocks.This directly shaped history: Jeromine was discovered in France as a direct bud mutation (sport) found growing on an Early Red One tree. This lineage passed down the intense early-coloring traits while refining the architecture into the highly prized, dwarf-friendly semi-spur models grown globally today.
