The Nagafu Fuji strains—including highly regarded clones like Nagafu 2, 6, and 12—originated in Japan as selected clones of the classic Ralls Janet and Red Delicious cross. Characterized by a vigorous, spreading tree habit requiring cross-pollinators like Gala or Golden Delicious, it yields medium-to-large, round-conical fruit. It features a distinctive duller pinkish-red striped skin over a greenish-yellow background that requires strong sunlight for optimal development. Requiring 600 to 800 winter chilling hours, Nagafu thrives at elevations between 5,000 and 8,000 feet, where cool autumn nights enhance coloration. Harvested late in late October when seeds blacken, ground color clears, and sugars hit 14–15% Brix, it is highly prone to watercore. The dense, creamy-white flesh provides extraordinary storage capacity, remaining crisp, sweet, and highly juicy for up to six months in standard cold storage and a full year under controlled atmosphere conditions.
