Red Chief (specifically Red Chief® Campbell) stands out as one of the most successful and widely planted true spur-type mutations of the Red Delicious family. Unlike modern semi-spur Italian clones, it exhibits a very compact, low-vigor growth habit that concentrates energy into heavy fruiting spurs, making it highly precocious and exceptionally productive. It develops a uniform, intense bright red stripe that matures into a deep solid blush well ahead of traditional varieties, though it requires good soil and moisture to prevent the tree from stunting out early. The fruit is large, sweet, and highly elongated with prominent crown lobes.
