Top Red stands out as a historic, classic standard mutation of the Red Delicious family, discovered in Washington in the late 1950s as a sport of Shotwell Delicious. In the Indian Himalayas, it served as a vital transitional strain between old-style striping apples and modern full-blush imports.Unlike modern compact spur types, Top Red exhibits a highly vigorous, standard growth habit with an upright structure, requiring ample spacing and a few extra years to enter commercial bearing. The fruit is large, crispy, and sweet with a classic elongated conical shape. In terms of coloration, it is distinctly classified as a striped strain rather than a solid blush. It develops a very dark red, attractive stripe over a lighter red background, and while it colors two to three weeks earlier than older standard varieties, it still relies on sharp autumn night temperatures to achieve a premium, uniform finish in mountain orchards.
