The Coe Fuji strain—frequently called Coe Red Fuji—was discovered in the United States as a limb mutation on a standard old-line Fuji tree in an orchard owned by the Coe family. Characterized by a highly vigorous, spreading tree architecture requiring strong structural training and cross-pollination from varieties like Gala, it produces medium-to-large, round-conical fruit. Unlike older Japanese striped clones, it was patented as a blush strain intended to develop a full crimson over-color without strong striping, though in many sub-temperate microclimates it reverts to a lighter, dusty pinkish-red or dull partial wash. Thriving best with 500 to 700 winter chilling hours at elevations between 4,500 and 6,500 feet, it is harvested late in October as ground color clears to yellow and sugars reach 14–15% Brix. The firm, crisp, creamy-white flesh offers exceptional shelf life, resisting softening for up to five months in standard cold storage and ten months under controlled atmosphere conditions.
