Developed in 1929 at England's East Malling Research Station by crossing M13 with M9, Malling 27 (M27) is an extreme super-dwarfing apple rootstock that produces a compact tree roughly 15% to 20% the size of a standard seedling. It is highly precocious, encouraging fruit production within the first two years, but its shallow, weak root system requires permanent trellising or staking, well-draining soil, and consistent irrigation. Regarding disease tolerance, M27 exhibits good resistance to collar rot (Phytophthora) and low burr knot development, alongside moderate tolerance to replant disease. However, it is highly susceptible to fire blight, lacks natural resistance to woolly apple aphids, and possesses relatively poor cold hardiness compared to Russian rootstocks. Because of its extremely compact stature, M27 is primarily utilized for ultra-high-density systems, container growing, or small residential orchards.
