MAC-9

Developed by Michigan State University in 1979 as an open-pollinated seedling of M.9 (originally designated MAC-9), Mark is a dwarfing apple rootstock producing trees 35–40% the size of a standard seedling. Known for extreme precocity and early cropping, it requires permanent trellising due to a brittle root system that can struggle under high crop loads. While highly cold hardy and resistant to collar rot (Phytophthora), Mark is susceptible to fire blight and woolly apple aphid, with minimal tolerance to replant disease. Notably, it exhibits high burr knot formation and can develop Root Mass Proliferation (RMP)—a tumorous swelling at the soil line that causes uneven vigor and drought sensitivity.
