M.26
Malling 26
M.16 × Golden Delicious
East Malling Research Station, UK, 1917
Cataloged by England’s East Malling Research Station in 1959 from a cross of M.16 and M.9, Malling 26 (M.26 / EMLA 26) is a versatile dwarf to semi-dwarf rootstock. It restricts mature tree size to roughly 45% of a standard seedling—bridging the gap between M.9 and M.7. Due to moderate root anchorage and a high tendency to produce burr knots, growth practices require permanent trunk support and keeping the graft union 3 to 4 inches above the soil line. M.26 is highly precocious and cold hardy. Regarding health challenges, it shows moderate resistance to Phytophthora root rot, but it is highly susceptible to fire blight, woolly apple aphids, and Apple Replant Disease.
