MM-106
Malling-Merton 106
M.1 × (Northern Spy × Red Astrachan)
East Malling Research Station, UK, 1952
Developed in England by crossing Northern Spy with Malling 1, MM.106 is a widely planted semi-dwarf rootstock. It produces a tree roughly 60% to 70% the size of a standard seedling, featuring a strong root system that typically eliminates the need for permanent staking on flat ground. Growth practices require wide spacing to prevent canopy shading and managing burr knot formation. It is highly precocious and productive for a semi-dwarf. Crucially, MM.106 is genetically resistant to woolly apple aphids, but it is extremely susceptible to Phytophthora collar/crown rot, making it risky for heavy, wet, or poorly drained soils.
