MM-116
Malling-Merton 116
M.1 × Northern Spy
East Malling Research Station, UK, 1952
Bred at England's East Malling Research Station by crossing MM106 with M27, MM116 is a semi-dwarfing to semi-vigorous apple rootstock designed to improve upon MM106. It produces a tree roughly 65% to 70% the size of a standard seedling (slightly smaller than MM106), offering early precocity, high yield efficiency, and excellent structural anchorage. Engineered with strong disease resistance, MM116 boasts high resistance to collar rot (Phytophthora)—a major upgrade over MM106—along with inherent resistance to woolly apple aphids and moderate tolerance to replant disease and powdery mildew. It exhibits low burr knot formation, produces few root suckers, and possesses moderate fire blight tolerance. While its cold hardiness is superior to M9/M27, it remains moderately cold-tolerant compared to Russian lines. Highly adaptable to heavy, clay, or wet soils, MM116 serves as an exceptionally reliable choice for replant sites.
