History & Origin: Discovered in 2011 in Grabouw, South Africa, by fruit expert Buks Nel as a natural bud mutation on a Corder Gala tree. The tree variety is officially named BigBucks, while the premium fruit that meets strict color criteria is packed and sold globally under the trademarked brand Flash Gala™. Qualities & Sizing: It produces a highly attractive, flat-globose to spherical-conical fruit shape. Unlike many early, ultra-dark mutations that struggle with fruit sizing or cause trees to lose structural power, Flash Gala maintains very strong tree vigor. This robust carbohydrate backing allows it to naturally yield a uniform, medium-to-large fruit size with a sweet, fragrant, and crunchy flesh profile that commands top-tier market prices. Climate & Color Stability: Exhibits outstanding, rock-solid color stability. It develops a full, intense wine-red to near-maroon blush across 80% to 100% of the skin surface with zero striation (striping). Because its genetics trigger intense coloration exceptionally early in the summer (often ripening 7 to 15 days before standard Gala), it completely bypasses the late-season monsoon color-stalling and warm-night issues that ruin older sports like Gale Gala in India. It is highly resistant to genetic reversion, making it a reliable, high-pack-out choice for challenging microclimates.
