History & Origin: Discovered in the 1970s in New Zealand as a natural bud mutation on a standard, pale-orange Gala tree (the classic cross of Kidd's Orange Red and Golden Delicious). It was patented by orchardist Henri Ten Hove. Qualities: Royal Gala set the first international standard for high-color sports. It is popular for its classic orange-red striped pattern over a golden-yellow ground, high sugars, and crisp texture. However, it requires excellent sunlight penetration and can lose its color edge or revert in warmer microclimates, making multiple picking passes necessary compared to modern solid-blush clones.
