Discovered in 1994 by the Princen brothers in Weert, Netherlands, Red Jonaprince Select (marketed as Jona Prince) is a premier, high-color bud sport mutation of Jonagold. Grown on vigorous, triploid trees with sterile pollen, it produces exceptionally large, heavy, round-conic fruit that frequently averages between 75 and 85 millimeters in diameter. Its standout feature is elite color quality: it develops an intense, uniform, deep solid red wash across 100% of the skin weeks before harvest, completely eliminating the patchy green background of the parent variety. Requiring 700 to 800 winter chilling hours, it thrives spectacularly in mid-to-high Himalayan belts between 5,500 and 8,500 feet. Harvested early-to-mid September as internal sugars peak, it delivers an outstandingly crisp, aromatic, and balanced sweet-tart taste profile. The dense, cream-colored, juicy flesh is highly stable, resisting bruising and offering superior cold storage performance for up to five months under standard refrigeration.
