The Royal Delicious—a red-striped sport mutation of the original Red Delicious (specifically traced to the Starking Delicious strain)—was imported to India in 1916 by American missionary Samuel Evans Stokes. Planted initially in his Barobagh orchard in Kotgarh, Himachal Pradesh, it laid the foundation for the region's agrarian economy and reigned as the undisputed king of the Indian apple industry for over half a century. Prized for its rich, aromatic sweetness, crisp white flesh, and distinctive dark red striations, it dominated high-altitude Himalayan commercial cultivation. However, modern pressures—including shifting climate patterns, rising disease vulnerabilities, and a changing market preference for high-density, fully red spur varieties—have prompted a gradual transition away from traditional standard trees. Royal Delicious thrives in high-altitude orchards between 5,000 and 8,000 feet, where cool night temperatures trigger vivid anthocyanin development, and requires 800 to 1,200 winter chill hours below 45°F (7°C) to satisfy dormancy and secure a uniform spring bloom.
